Sberbank, Europe's largest data center, is certified by LEED to silver level

The uniqueness of the project

Sberbank's data center is located on the territory of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. As of October 2019, it is the largest data center in Europe and the first LEED certified data center in Russia. In addition, the Data Center is certified by the Uptime Institute at Tier III level.

  • LEED Certification – confirms that the design and construction of the building is carried out to the best standards in the field of ecology and energy efficiency.
  • Tier III certification confirms the reliability and fail-safe operation of data center systems.

The Sberbank data center building consists of an administrative unit and five technology modules. The total area is about 33,000 sq m. Installed electrical capacity 31.2 MW. In each module of the data center there are 4 engine rooms with the possibility of installation up to 24 thousand. Servers. 

The total duration of the project was about 5 years. HPBS accompanied the certification of the project during the work documentation and construction phase. The designer was Cronta Construction. Insystems, a construction developer and general contractor, is a consortium with Mercury Construction Management.

The Silver Certification Level is ensured that all mandatory requirements are met. As a result, 56 points were received (silver level is achieved when receiving 50-59 points).

Features of date certification centers

The fourth-generation LEED certification system offers a special scheme for data centers. This scheme takes into account the features of data center energy consumption, in particular the fact that more than 90% of the energy is spent on computing processes and cooling servers. Thus, in order to pass THE LEED certification for the building's processing center, it is necessary that the server equipment and cooling systems of the racks be modern and enegro-efficient.

Leed Silver Solutions

What solutions have been certified by LEED Silver as follows in accordance with the LEED sections.

Location and transport:

The Sberbank facility is located on the territory of the Skolkovo Innovation Center, which primarily provided an advantage for the criteria of this section. A comprehensive transport plan based on the calculation of pedestrian loads, bicycles and vehicles was developed for Skolkovo, and existing transport hubs and construction of the Skolkovo transport hub were taken into account. Skolkovo Institute adopted and approved the Skolkovo Foundation's system of transport priorities:

  • Pedestrian
  • Bike
  • public transport
  • individual transport.

A parking scheme has been developed where you can leave your personal transport and use the internal public transport of the Innovation Center. As a result, the movement on individual transport has been minimized, the burden on the infrastructure of external transport has been reduced due to the location of a rich list of services, shops and housing on the territory. There is a high level of security to travel within the Centre.

Skolkovo territory is a priority development area, providing jobs not only to the local population, but through developed transport links creating an outflow of labor from overcrowded business areas of Moscow. Most of the criteria in this section can also be applied to other Skolkovo IC projects.

Sustainable areas:

Prior to the start of the work, soil reclamation was carried out at the site. The object is planned in such a way that there is a large area of open, accessible space (71% of the total area of the site). The area of landscaping is 44%. In order to reduce overheating in the summer, solid coatings use materials that provide a high level of reflection of solar radiation, for example, in the roof covering used light pebbles with the index of reflection of the sun SRI 37.

Water efficiency:

Reducing water consumption is achieved through the use of water-efficient plumbing equipment (for example, the consumption of 1.24 l/min faucets, showers 5.7 l/min). Separate water metering devices for household and technological needs are installed, separately on the administrative and household complex and each module. The estimated water consumption of all 5 modules is 115 cubic meters/day, the water consumption for household needs ABC – 9 cubic meters/day.

Energy and atmosphere:

To assess the energy efficiency of the building, LEED certification is power modeling, and two models are created. First of all, it is the basic, which lays parameters of the building and systems according to the standard ASHRAE 90.1-2010, Appendix G, and design. These two models are then compared. The energy modelling has shown excellent results. The Sberbank data center project received 18 points out of a possible 18, achieving a 57.7% reduction in energy consumption relative to ASHRAE standards. Some of the measures that have ensured this energy efficiency:

  • Effective technology equipment
  • The building has low proportion of translucent structures (8%) double double-glazed windows with thermal conductivity of 1.1 W/sq.m, thermal conductivity 0.217 W/sq.m. S, external walls – 0.217 W/sq.m. S and 0.152 W/sq.m.
  • Installed Internal lighting capacity – 9.3 w/sq.m.
  • Work outdoor lighting by light sensor or astronomical time relay
  • Vrv air conditioning systems with energy ratio EER efficiency (cold-ivity relation to full consumption capacity) up to 15.49 kW/kW and COP thermal coefficient (power ratio) heating to power consumption) up to 4.54 kW/kW
  • SFP values – specific fan power vents (power related to the flow supplied Air system (W/L/s)): average, 1.2 W/L/s – 2 W/L/s
  • Used free cooling system (free cooling)

Materials and resources:

The LEED v4 version imposes very stringent material requirements. Much attention is paid to assessing the environmental impact of materials at all stages of the life cycle, from raw materials extraction to production, operation and disposal. You can confirm compliance with the requirements by providing various certificates: EPD, CSR, FSC, HPD, Cradle to Cradle and others. In Russia, it is very difficult to get points by fulfilling these requirements. However, in the materials and resource division, points were obtained only on the criteria for reuse and disposal of construction waste, which can already be considered a major achievement.

The quality of the internal microclimate:

In order to meet the requirements of this section, Sberbank has provided 30% higher than ASHRAE 62.1-10. All the units have F7-class filters and mud protection systems on the entrance groups. In the dirty premises, a separate hood and pressure drop with neighbouring premises is organized in order to ensure negative pressure.

During the construction period, a plan was developed to ensure the quality of the internal air. In accordance with it, the site organized activities to reduce the negative impact of construction work, including: equipment is protected from building dust, organized separate storage areas with potential VOC and separate for hydroscopic materials, installed temporary curtains to prevent the entry of contaminated air from the areas of construction work in areas where the work is already finished.

Regional priority:

With LEED certification, regional scores are automatically awarded when you meet the requirements that are of priority to the host country. In this regard, at the Sberbank data center project, regional points were obtained for meeting the requirements under several criteria. First of all – Protecting valuable land, protecting natural habitat and optimizing energy consumption.
